A
"witch doctor" from Ghana claims that he is responsible for the knee
injury that may limit Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2014 FIFA World
Cup.
Nana
Kwaku Bonsam, a Ghanaian witch doctor, told a radio station in his home country
that he used his “powers” to injure Ronaldo’s leg. The Real Madrid star’s bout
of knee tendinitis may keep him out of Portugal’s Group G opener against
Germany on June 16.
“I know
what Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury is about, I’m working on him,” Bonsam told
Angel FM in Kumasi, Ghana, according to a translation by the Guardian. “I am
very serious about it. Last week, I went around looking for four dogs and I got
them to be used in manufacturing a special spirit called Kahwiri Kapam.”
“I said
four months ago that I will work on Cristiano Ronaldo seriously and rule him
out for the World Cup or at least prevent him from playing against Ghana, and
the best thing I can do is to keep him out through injury,” he added. “This
injury can never be cured by any medic, they can never see what is causing the
injury because it is spiritual. Today, it is his knee, tomorrow it is his
thigh, next day it is something else.”
On
Tuesday, the Portuguese Football Federation revealed that Ronaldo was suffering
from left-leg patellar tendinitis, or “jumper’s knee,” in
addition to his existing thigh injury. The knee injury casts doubts over
whether he’ll be ready to participate in the World Cup opener, as well as how
effective he’ll be if he’s able to return.
Nani,
Ronaldo’s teammate on Portugal’s national team, remains optimistic about the
prolific goal scorer’s playing status. “We hope that Cristiano is in good
enough shape to play—and to help the team,” he told FIFA.com. “If for
some reason he is not there, whoever is there playing has to be confident in
their ability to get the job done. The World Cup is a one-of-a-kind challenge.
I want to be fully fit, and in top form along with my teammates.”
Ronaldo
remains “relaxed” about his injury situation, Nani added. Portugal is slated to
play Ghana in its final Group G matchup on June 28.
