LSK backs local firm’s deal with global practice Dentons

One of Kenya’s oldest law firms, Hamilton Harrison & Mathews Advocates (HH&M), has obtained the backing of the Kenyan lawyers’ lobby to partner with Dentons — the eighth largest law practice in the world.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) nod comes as Dentons seeks a foothold in the local market.

The partnership will see HH & M, started in 1902, harmonise its operations with Dentons while giving it affiliations to other Dentons units in 76 countries. The deal, however, is not a merger.

“With over 9,000 lawyers in more than 167 locations, our firm is now part of a group providing client business solutions globally,” HH & M managing partner Adil Khawaja said.

The elite Kenyan firm will also change its name to Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews as it leverages the partnership to clinch more lucrative corporate advisory deals. HH & M said their association was a result of decade-long association with Dentons. Dentons' Africa chief executive Noor Kapdi termed its entry into Kenya as strategic saying Nairobi will be the firm’s regional hub as it grows its operations to cover East Africa.

HH & M senior partner Richard Omwela hailed the partnership saying both firms had a wealth of experience to share that will improve service delivery to their clients.

The deal is part of a growing trend where Kenyan and global law firms sign partnerships to facilitate cross-border transactions on various investments.

HH & M has expertise in banking and finance, corporate, dispute resolution, real estate and TMT (Telecommunications, Media and Technology) sectors.
